Product Info - Protection against Fleas

Efficacy against fleas

The benefits of Imidacloprid, can be summarized by two major characteristics.
One is the selectivity in binding to insect receptors instead of vertebrate receptors. The other is the fast onset of efficacy.
The latter is due to the fact that Imidacloprid first inhibits feeding of the flea by paralyzing the mouth parts of the flea at sub-lethal dosages, followed by death of the flea.

Fleas, a problem in close contact between man and animals

Fast onset of efficacy is, besides the persistent effect, the most important element in flea control in our companion animals. This is because fleas are not only a pest and regarded as a hygienic problem, but they may cause serious problems to their host.
Direct clinical symptoms are:

Transmission of pathogens

  • Dog tapeworm (Dipylidium caninum) is transmitted by fleas. Prevention of flea infestations is also prevention of tapeworm infection. Flea control using AdvantixÆ and tapeworm therapy with DroncitÆ or DrontalÆ Plus gives you the highest possible protection.

  • Bacterial infections such as Bartonella henselae, the causative agent of the so called "cat scratch fever", is a serious zoonosis.
Flea Allergic Dermatitis (FAD)

  • Flea-derived dermatitis, is a frequent cause of veterinary consultation by pet owners. The flea's saliva is the cause of FAD. Only a fast-acting flea control like AdvantixÆ that acts topically by contact can limit flea bites to near extinction.

AdvantixÆ has a proven persistency for up to weeks ? This is another important criterion.

Product Info - Protection against Ticks

Ticks - the most common ectoparasites

Ticks are, like fleas, among the most common and most important ectoparasites.
The most important species of hard ticks in Europe feeding on dogs are the Castor bean tick (Ixodes ricinus) and the Brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus). Further species of the Dermacentor, Amblyomma or Haemaphysalis genera show only regional distribution.
Ticks are well designed to transmit disease agents such as viruses, bacteria and protozoa. Ixodes ticks are the major vectors of Lyme Borreliosis, Rhipicephalusticks may cause Ehrlichiosi. These tickborne diseases are of concern both for canine and human health.
Laboratory-controlled studies conducted with I. ricinus, R. sanguineus and other tick species have proven the high acaricidal efficacy of AdvantixÆ.
Figures 5+6 show the persistent efficacy exceeding the four week period.

The repellency effect

Besides the acaricidal efficacy, a given for any approved tick product, the active Permethrin in AdvantixÆ holds an important additional property. This is the repellent effect, a benefit to significantly reduce tick attachment in the first place. The importance of the repellent property of Permethrin is the inhibition of blood feeding by reducing the numbers of ticks attached to the dog. Laboratory-controlled studies showed the repellent and acaricidal effect of AdvantixÆ, also in comparison to FrontlineÆ.

AdvantixÆ: Proven ability of preventing tick-borne diseases

While various tick control products have demonstrated their efficacy in killing ticks, little if at all is known about the ability of these products to prevent transmission of tick-borne diseases. Ticks of the Ixodes genus are worldwide the most important
vector of Borrelia burgdorferi to both dogs and humans.
In a study 6 AdvantixÆ demonstrated its high effectiveness not only against ticks but also against the transmission of disease. Borrelia-free dogs were treated with AdvantixÆ on day 0 and experimentally infested on day 7 with 100 Ixodes ticks with an average B. burgdorferi infectivity of 57 %. Dogs were observed for seroconversion and Borrelia were counted in biopsy samples. By day 42 all control dogs showed seroconversion, as compared with none of the AdvantixÆ treated dogs.
This study showed the ability of AdvantixÆ to prevent canine Borreliosis.

Product Info - Protection against Mosquitoes and Sandflies

Efficacy against mosquitoes

A controlled laboratory study7 was conducted to examine the efficacy and repellency of AdvantixÆ in comparison to FrontlineÆ Plus against mosquitoes (Culex pipiens). Dogs were treated at day 0. On days 1, 3, 7, 14, 21 and 30, the dogs were exposed to 50 mosquitoes each. The number of live or dead mosquitoes and whether they were fed or unfed were counted. AdvantixÆ demonstrated repellent activity against C. pipiens, as determined by the ability to prevent feeding, ranging from 96.5 % to 100 % at all the points in time assessed during this study. In contrast, repellency of FrontlineÆ Plus ranged from 83.3 % on day 1, to a low of 0% on day 3, to 5.5 % on day 30.

Efficacy against sand flies

The objective of this blinded study8 was the evaluation of the repellent and insecticidal efficacy of AdvantixÆ against sand flies (Phlebotomus papatasi) on dogs. The repellency efficacy criterion was based on the sand flies' feeding rate in the treatment group compared to the untreated group. The insecticidal efficacy criterion was based on the sand flies' survival rate in the treatment group compared to the untreated group. On day 0 the dogs in the treatment group received AdvantixÆ and the others were placebo treated. Dogs were exposed at weekly intervals to about 200 female sand flies for a period of four weeks.
